Created by a follower of the Italian painter, Caravaggio (1571-1610). The painting comes from the Studio of Caravaggio, mostly likely very soon before his mysterious death between Rome and Naples. The painting was passed on to the gallery by the former director of the National Gallery, Sir Edward Poynter.
