Richard Allan
Richard is a landscape painter based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. He paints in oil al fresco. “I spend my time out on location in all weathers recording my impressions of the landscape. Typically these will be places within an hour of home”, he states.
Richard always takes his paints and canvas along with him wherever he goes. He just “loves painting”, he says. Therefore when visiting Norfolk with friends this September he painted the boat yard there.
Richard has had lots of formal tuition as well as from artists he admires and he paints every day for at least two hours.
Usually he starts his paintings on location and the changing light helps to keep him focused. He then finishes them slightly if need be when he gets home at the end of the day. Richard does not consider himself a plein-air painter, but that tag may be inevitable as much of his work is done outside.
Richard’s favourite medium is oils but now and again he tries the odd watercolour.
As well as landscape painting he attends life drawing and painting classes most weeks. Originally he said, this was to improve his drawing but recently he has started to produce life paintings for their own sake.
Richard is part of Cambridge Open Studios.
