Anthony Day
Working from Wicken, Anthony Day painted his surrounding fenland landscape for sixty years. Whilst studying at Cambridge School of Art between 1948 and 1952, Anthony turned to painting en plein air as a way of spending time in the countryside. Anthony holds the opinion that it is necessary for his subjects to be within walking distance, for he believed that there is suitable subject matter for every painter close to their back door.
Anthony used a palette of subtle colours, predominantly in gouache, although also in egg tempera and pencil, to capture the transient movement of light and soft breezes through the fens. His oeuvre as a whole also communicates this slow sense of change: the seasons leave their distinct traces on the canvas and when viewed together, one can get a sense of experiencing years' worth of fenland landscapes in a single moment.
